The Oklahoma SGO Tax Credit

Under the Oklahoma Equal Opportunity Education Scholarship Act, donors receive a significant state income tax credit — making it one of the most efficient ways to support education in Oklahoma.

Give More, Keep More

Your donation to OPA Scholarship Fund qualifies for an Oklahoma state income tax credit of 50–75% of the contribution amount. That means a significant portion of what you give comes back to you as a reduction in your Oklahoma tax bill — not just a deduction, but a dollar-for-dollar credit.

Oklahoma State Tax Credit

Oklahoma residents who donate to an approved SGO receive a state income tax credit of 50–75% of their contribution. A tax credit reduces the actual tax you owe, dollar for dollar — far more powerful than a standard deduction.

Business Donors

Oklahoma State Tax Credit

Oklahoma businesses subject to state income tax, franchise tax, or insurance premium tax can donate and claim the same credit rate. For many businesses, the effective out-of-pocket cost of a donation is a fraction of the face amount.

Important: The exact credit percentage and any annual limits are set by Oklahoma statute (68 Okla. Stat. § 2357.206) and may be updated by the legislature. We recommend consulting your tax advisor or CPA for guidance specific to your situation. Your donation is also deductible for federal income tax purposes as a charitable contribution, subject to applicable limits.

How to Donate

The donation process is straightforward. Here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.

1

Contact Us

Reach out by email or phone to let us know you'd like to contribute. We'll confirm your eligibility, provide current program details, and send you our donation instructions. There's no complicated paperwork to start.

2

Make Your Contribution

Contributions are made by check, electronic transfer, or our secure online donation form. We'll provide all the information you need. Your donation must be made to an OTC-approved SGO — that's us — to qualify for the state tax credit.

3

Receive Your Acknowledgment

We'll provide a written contribution acknowledgment confirming your donation amount and our 501(c)(3) status. You'll need this for both your federal charitable deduction and your Oklahoma tax credit claim.

4

Claim Your Tax Credit

Share your contribution acknowledgment with your CPA or tax preparer. They'll apply the Oklahoma SGO tax credit to your state return, reducing your tax liability dollar for dollar up to the applicable credit rate. The OTC processes credit claims as part of the normal tax filing process.

5

Kids Receive Scholarships

100% of donated funds (less minimal administrative costs) are awarded as scholarships to income-qualifying Oklahoma students attending participating private schools. We report all scholarship activity annually to the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Starting in 2027: individual donors to a federally-certified SGO can also claim a new federal tax credit (IRC §25F) of up to $1,700 per year, on top of the Oklahoma credit above. Oklahoma has opted in at the state level, but each SGO — OPA Scholarship Fund included — must separately register for federal certification, which we intend to pursue for 2027. Your CPA can confirm current status before you count on it for a specific gift.

Common Questions

Who is eligible to donate and receive the tax credit?
Any individual or business subject to Oklahoma state income tax, franchise tax, or insurance premium tax may donate and claim the credit. This includes Oklahoma residents, S-corps, C-corps, LLCs, and other pass-through entities with Oklahoma tax liability. Consult your CPA for your specific situation.
Is this the same as a tax deduction?
No — and that's important. A tax credit reduces your actual tax bill dollar for dollar, which is far more valuable than a deduction. A $10,000 donation generating a 75% credit reduces your Oklahoma taxes by $7,500. A deduction of the same amount would only reduce your taxable income, resulting in a much smaller benefit depending on your tax bracket. You may also claim the donation as a federal charitable deduction (subject to applicable rules).
Can I specify which school my donation supports?
Donors may designate a qualifying private school they'd like their contribution to benefit. However, per Oklahoma law and our non-donor-directed policy, donors cannot designate a specific student recipient. All scholarship awards are made by our board based on documented eligibility and selection criteria.
How do I know my donation is actually going to students?
Oklahoma law requires that at least 90% of all SGO contributions be awarded as scholarships within 24 months. OPA Scholarship Fund commits to this standard, maintains full financial records, and reports scholarship activity annually to the Oklahoma Tax Commission. All scholarship funds are paid directly to qualifying schools — not to students or parents.
Is there a minimum or maximum donation amount?
There is no minimum donation required by our organization. Maximum annual tax credit amounts are set by Oklahoma statute and may change. We recommend verifying current limits with your CPA or contacting the Oklahoma Tax Commission directly. Contact us and we'll walk you through the current program parameters.
How quickly will I receive my contribution acknowledgment?
We issue written contribution acknowledgments promptly upon receipt of your donation — typically within a few business days. This document is what you'll give your tax preparer to claim the credit and the federal charitable deduction.
Is there a federal tax credit too?
Starting with gifts made in 2027, a new federal tax credit under IRC §25F will let individual donors claim up to $1,700 per year for contributions to a federally-certified SGO, on top of the Oklahoma state credit. Oklahoma has opted in at the state level, but each individual SGO — including OPA Scholarship Fund — must separately register and be certified for the federal program, which is distinct from our existing OTC state approval. We intend to pursue that certification for 2027. Ask your CPA for the latest on timing before assuming a specific gift will qualify.
